Why rent a campervan in Alicante?
Alicante is one of Spain's best starting points for a campervan trip: an international airport with direct flights from much of Europe, beaches and mountains within an hour and mild weather almost all year. You land, pick up the van and within minutes you're on the Costa Blanca.
- Northern Costa Blanca: Calpe, Jávea, Dénia and Altea, with coves, the Peñón de Ifach and good overnight areas outside high season.
- Inland Alicante at 1 hour: Guadalest, the Aitana mountains, the Pop valley and Alcoy, with mountain roads, hiking and castle villages.
- Southern coast at 45 minutes: Santa Pola, the Torrevieja salt lakes and the Vega Baja, with wide beaches and plenty of sun.
- Murcia and the Mar Menor at 1.5 hours: La Manga, Cabo de Palos and, further south, Cabo de Gata to link up with the Almería coast.
Recommended campervan routes from Alicante
Northern Costa Blanca (3-4 days)
Drive up the AP-7 or the N-332 to Altea, Calpe and Jávea, and finish in Dénia. Coves, seafront promenades and the Peñón de Ifach. In July and August traffic is heavy and space is scarce: book ahead and look for motorhome areas or campsites.
Inland: Guadalest, Aitana and Alcoy (2-3 days)
Take the Callosa road to Guadalest and continue through the Aitana mountains. The climb has bends and slopes, so take care with long vehicles. A good option in autumn and spring, when the coast is crowded or hot.
Southern coast and the Mar Menor (2-3 days)
From Alicante to Santa Pola and Torrevieja, then on to the Mar Menor and Cabo de Palos. Wide, flat beaches with good access. The area fills up in summer and is much quieter out of season.
Alicante to Cabo de Gata (4-5 days)
Combine the Costa Blanca with the Costa Cálida and enter Almería as far as Cabo de Gata. A long, sunny route for those travelling for more than a week.

Frequently asked questions
Can I pick up the camper at Alicante airport?
Yes. Several companies offer pick-up or delivery at Alicante-Elche airport, usually for a fee (for example €25 for a transfer or €50 for a hand-over at the airport). Others have their base nearby and arrange a transfer. Check the cost and availability when booking.
Can I sleep overnight in Alicante and the Costa Blanca?
Overnight stays on public roads are restricted in many coastal towns. The usual approach is to use motorhome areas or campsites and, inland, the designated areas. Always check the local rules where you plan to stop.
What driving licence do I need to rent a camper?
A category B licence is enough for most campers. Almost all companies ask for at least 2 years of driving experience and a minimum age of 25; check the exact requirement before booking.
Can I travel with my pet?
It depends on the company. Some accept dogs at no charge or with a surcharge (for example €80 for cleaning), sometimes with a weight limit, and others do not accept animals. Confirm when booking.
Can I travel to Portugal or France?
Some companies allow Portugal, France and Andorra, and others require prior notice and ask for a deposit supplement if you leave the peninsula. Morocco is usually forbidden or requires specific insurance. Always ask before you go.
Is it better to rent in high or low season?
Spring and autumn offer the best balance of weather, price and availability. In July and August prices rise, minimum stays are 7 days and small fleets sell out months ahead.
