Why rent a campervan in Málaga?
Málaga is one of Spain's best starting points for a campervan trip: an international airport with direct flights from much of Europe, sea and mountains within two hours and good weather almost all year. You land, pick up the van and within an hour you can be sleeping by the sea or in a white village.
- Costa del Sol and the Axarquía: from Estepona to Nerja, coves, beach bars and coastal roads. Inland, villages such as Frigiliana and Comares have narrow roads where a campervan is easier to handle than a motorhome.
- Ronda and the White Villages at 1-2 hours: Ronda, Setenil de las Bodegas and Grazalema, with viewpoints, hiking and mountain roads.
- Cádiz and Tarifa at 2-3 hours: Atlantic beaches, kitesurfing and overnight areas by the sea.
- Granada and the Sierra Nevada at 1.5-2 hours: the Alhambra, Mulhacén and high-mountain routes, with snow in winter.
Recommended campervan routes from Málaga
Costa del Sol and the Axarquía (3-4 days)
Drive the coast from west to east, from Estepona to Nerja, and climb into the Axarquía villages on narrow roads. It combines beaches, hiking and great food. Outside July and August there is far more room to park and stay overnight.
Ronda and the White Villages (3-4 days)
Climb the Serranía de Ronda to Grazalema and come down through Setenil de las Bodegas. It's a mountain-road route through olive groves and whitewashed villages. Take care with bends and larger vehicles.
Cádiz, Tarifa and the Atlantic coast (4-5 days)
From Málaga along the coast to Tarifa, then up through Conil and Cádiz. It's the route for wide beaches, surfing and kitesurfing. The levante wind can be strong in Tarifa, so keep your camper's height in mind.
Granada and the Sierra Nevada (3-4 days)
Granada for the Alhambra and the Albaicín, then the Alpujarra and the Sierra Nevada. In winter, check road conditions and carry snow chains if you go up to the ski resort.

Frequently asked questions
Can I pick up the camper at Málaga airport?
Yes. Several companies are very close to the airport (5-15 minutes) and some include airport pick-up or drop-off. Others offer it for a fee (for example €40-50) or with a taxi transfer. Check the cost and availability when booking.
Can I sleep overnight in Málaga city?
Overnight stays on public roads in the city and in many coastal towns are restricted. The usual approach is to use motorhome areas or campsites and, inland, the designated areas of each municipality. Always check the local rules where you plan to stop.
What driving licence do I need to rent a camper?
A category B licence is enough for most campers. Almost all companies ask for 2 to 5 years of driving experience and a minimum age of 21 to 27; check the exact requirement before booking.
Can I travel with my pet?
It depends on the company. Several allow it for a supplement or an additional deposit (for example €89-100), sometimes with a weight limit. Others do not accept animals. Confirm when booking.
Can I take the rented camper to Portugal or Morocco?
Some companies allow Portugal, sometimes only with a specific insurance, and others limit travel to Spain and Portugal with heavy penalties elsewhere. Morocco usually requires specific insurance. Always ask before you go.
Is it too hot in summer?
In July and August temperatures in inland Andalusia easily exceed 40 °C and a camper's air conditioning is rarely enough. Spring and autumn, with lower prices and better weather, are better times to travel.
