Why rent a campervan in Girona?
Girona is a very good base for a campervan or motorhome trip in north-eastern Catalonia: the Costa Brava with its coves and fishing villages, the Empordà with its medieval towns, the volcanic landscape of La Garrotxa and the Pyrenees, all within about an hour of the city. The Girona-Costa Brava airport is about 12 kilometres from the city and Barcelona is just over an hour away on the AP-7 motorway. The rental companies in this guide are based in the province, in Lloret de Mar and in the Alt Empordà, and several of them deliver to the airport and to the Girona train station.
- Costa Brava at 30-45 minutes: Tossa de Mar, Calella de Palafrugell, Begur, L'Escala and Roses, with coves, cliffs and the Camí de Ronda coastal path.
- Empordà at 30-45 minutes: Pals, Peratallada, Besalú and Figueres, with the Dalí Theatre-Museum, and the Cap de Creus natural park.
- La Garrotxa at about 1 hour: the volcanic area around Olot, with beech forests and villages of dark stone.
- Pyrenees at 1.5-2 hours: Ripollès, Camprodon, the Vall de Núria and the Cerdanya.
Recommended campervan routes from Girona
Costa Brava (3-5 days)
Drive the coast from Blanes and Tossa de Mar to Begur, Calella de Palafrugell and Cadaqués. The roads along the coast are winding and parking in the villages is limited in summer, so a compact camper is much easier than a large motorhome. The road to Cadaqués is narrow and not suitable for big vehicles.
Empordà and Cap de Creus (2-3 days)
Go inland through Pals, Peratallada and Besalú and continue to Figueres and Roses. The Cap de Creus natural park has strict rules on access and overnight stays. On some days the tramontana, the strong north wind of the Empordà, makes high-sided vehicles harder to drive.
La Garrotxa and Olot (2-3 days)
A quieter route to the volcanic natural park, with forest trails and villages such as Santa Pau and Castellfollit de la Roca. Winter and spring are good, and it is cooler in summer than the coast.
Pyrenees (3-4 days)
Head north to Ripoll, Camprodon and the Vall de Núria, or on to the Cerdanya. The mountain roads are narrow and winter conditions can require chains: ask your rental company about snow equipment.
Indicative prices for campervan rental in Girona
- Low season: from about €100/day.
- Mid season: between €110 and €160/day.
- High season (July and August): between €130 and €200/day, depending on the model.
These are starting prices published by the companies in this guide (October 2026). Many companies add a service fee per booking (around €40-50), ask for a minimum stay of 3 days or more (and longer in high season) and include a mileage allowance of 200-250 km per day. Compare what each rate includes: insurance excess, deposit, bed linen, pets and delivery at the airport are often charged separately.
Frequently asked questions
Can I pick up the camper at Girona airport or the train station?
Some companies in this guide deliver to Girona-Costa Brava airport and to the Girona and Figueres train stations, usually with a supplement that depends on the length of the rental; others ask you to collect the vehicle at their base. Check the cost and the meeting point when you book.
Is it a good idea to drive a camper along the Costa Brava?
Yes, but outside July and August it is much more comfortable. The coastal roads are winding and the villages have little parking in summer, so reserve your overnight stops and avoid the busiest weekends.
Can I sleep overnight in a camper?
Free overnight parking is regulated by each municipality and is not allowed in many Costa Brava towns or in protected natural areas. Use campsites and motorhome areas, and check the local rules wherever you plan to stop.
What is the weather like?
The climate is Mediterranean, with hot summers and mild winters on the coast and colder weather in the mountains. The tramontana wind can be strong in the Empordà. Spring and autumn are the best times for quiet roads and good temperatures.
What driving licence do I need?
A category B licence is enough. Most companies ask for 2 or 3 years of driving experience and a minimum age of 25; check the exact requirement before booking.
Can I travel with my pet or to France?
Many companies accept pets, usually with a supplement. France is very close and some companies allow it with prior notice; not all of them do, so always ask before you go.
