Why rent a campervan in Tenerife?
Tenerife is an island where you can go from the coast to a volcano over 3,000 metres high in about an hour. A camper lets you cross it at your own pace: sunrise at the Teide National Park, the ferns and fog of the Anaga rural park, the black-sand beaches of the south and the villages of the north coast. The rental companies in this guide are based in La Laguna, Santa Cruz, El Médano and Costa del Silencio, close to the two airports.
- Teide National Park at 1-1.5 hours: a volcanic landscape at more than 2,000 metres, reached by roads that climb from the north, the south and the west.
- Anaga Rural Park at 30-45 minutes from La Laguna: laurel forest, viewpoints and small villages in the north-east, with narrow roads.
- North coast at about 1 hour: Puerto de la Cruz, La Orotava, Garachico and Icod de los Vinos.
- South coast at 45-60 minutes from Santa Cruz: El Médano, Los Cristianos and Costa Adeje, with dry weather almost all year.
Recommended campervan routes in Tenerife
Teide National Park (1-2 days)
Go up through La Orotava or Vilaflor to the Las Cañadas del Teide and the Roques de García. The cable car and the final stretch to the summit require advance booking and a free permit, which you should apply for on the official National Park website. Overnight stays are not allowed inside the park, so plan to sleep below it.
Anaga and the north-east (2-3 days)
Leave from La Laguna or Santa Cruz towards the Anaga mountains and the villages of Taganana and Almáciga. The roads are narrow and winding: a compact camper is much easier here than a large motorhome.
North coast: Orotava Valley and Garachico (2-3 days)
Drive along the north coast from Puerto de la Cruz to Icod de los Vinos and Garachico, with natural pools and the old town. The north is greener and cloudier than the south.
South coast and west (2-3 days)
From El Médano go to Los Cristianos and Costa Adeje, and continue to Los Gigantes and the Teno area. The Masca road is very narrow and not suitable for large vehicles. From Los Cristianos you can also take a ferry to La Gomera (ask your rental company first).
Indicative prices for campervan rental in Tenerife
- Compact campers and small vans: from about €50-80/day.
- Medium and large campers: between €90 and €120/day.
- Motorhomes: from about €110/day.
These are starting prices published by the companies in this guide (October 2026). Rates change with the season (Christmas, Easter and the summer holidays are the busiest) and some companies ask for a minimum of 3 days or more. Compare what each rate includes: mileage, insurance excess, deposit, bed linen and delivery are often charged separately.
Frequently asked questions
Which airport is better for picking up the camper?
Tenerife has two airports: Tenerife Sur (Reina Sofía), in the south, and Tenerife Norte (Los Rodeos), near La Laguna. Not every company delivers to the airports; some ask you to collect the vehicle at their base. Check this when you book.
Can I sleep overnight in a camper?
Free overnight parking is regulated and not allowed in many protected areas, including the Teide National Park. Use campsites and motorhome areas, and check the local rules wherever you plan to stop.
Can I take the camper to another island?
Some companies allow it with prior notice, for example the ferry from Los Cristianos to La Gomera, but not all of them. Ask before you book and confirm the extra cost and the insurance cover.
What is the best time to travel?
The climate is mild all year. The south is dry and sunny; the north is greener and cloudier; the Teide is cold in winter and can have snow. Christmas, Easter and the summer months are the most expensive and busiest periods.
What driving licence do I need?
A category B licence is enough. Most companies ask for 2 years of driving experience and a minimum age of 25; check the exact requirement before booking.
Can I travel with my pet?
It depends on the company: some accept pets with a supplement or prior consent and others do not. Confirm it when you book.
