Why rent a campervan in Asturias?
Asturias is small and green, and everything is close: you can go from a cliff-edged beach to a mountain lake in under an hour and a half. It is a very good place for a campervan or motorhome trip, with fishing villages, the Picos de Europa, nature reserves and a food scene based on cider and cheese. The rental companies in this guide are based in Llanera, Oviedo, Villaviciosa and Ribadedeva, and some of them can meet you at Asturias airport, which sits between Avilés, Gijón and Oviedo.
- Central coast at 30-45 minutes from Oviedo: Gijón, Cabo Peñas, Avilés and the villages of the west such as Cudillero.
- Eastern coast at 1-1.5 hours: Villaviciosa, Lastres, Ribadesella and Llanes, with coves, cliffs and the Gulpiyuri beach.
- Picos de Europa at about 1 hour from Oviedo: Cangas de Onís, Covadonga, the Enol and Ercina lakes and the Cabrales valley.
- Somiedo and the west at 1.5-2 hours: a natural park with high mountain pastures, lakes and villages with traditional brañas.
Recommended campervan routes in Asturias
Eastern coast (3-4 days)
Drive along the coast from Villaviciosa and the cider country to Lastres, Ribadesella and Llanes, and stop at coves such as Gulpiyuri or Torimbia. It is the most popular route and gets busy in July and August, so book your overnight stops.
Picos de Europa (3-4 days)
Go to Cangas de Onís and Covadonga and continue towards the Cabrales valley and the Cares route. Access by private vehicle to the Covadonga lakes is regulated in high season, with a shuttle from Covadonga, so check the restrictions before you go up with a large vehicle.
Western coast and Cudillero (2-3 days)
Head west to Cudillero, Luarca and the coast of the Navia area. The roads are winding and the villages have little parking: a compact camper is much easier than a large motorhome.
Somiedo and the mountains (2-3 days)
Go up to the Somiedo Natural Park, a biosphere reserve with lakes and high pastures. Check the road conditions beforehand, because some mountain roads are narrow and unsuitable for large vehicles.
Indicative prices for camper rental in Asturias
- Low season: from about €80-100/day for campers and small motorhomes.
- Mid season (June and September): between €100 and €130/day.
- High season (July and August): between €125 and €170/day, depending on the model.
These are starting prices published by the companies in this guide (October 2026). Many of them rent both campers and motorhomes and some ask for a minimum of 3 days or more, and a longer minimum in July and August. Compare what each rate includes: mileage, insurance excess, deposit, bed linen and airport delivery are often charged separately.
Frequently asked questions
Can I pick up the camper at Asturias airport?
Some companies in this guide deliver to Asturias airport (usually with a supplement), and others ask you to collect the vehicle at their base. The airport is about 15 minutes from the centre of Avilés, Gijón and Oviedo. Check the cost and the meeting point when you book.
What is the weather like?
Asturias is green because it rains throughout the year, with mild summers and cool winters. The best months are late spring, summer and early autumn; plan flexible routes and look for covered activities for rainy days.
Is it difficult to drive a motorhome in Asturias?
The motorways are good, but many coastal and mountain roads are narrow and winding, and parking in the villages is limited in summer. A compact camper is easier on the Picos de Europa, Somiedo and the western coast.
Can I sleep overnight in a camper?
There are motorhome areas and campsites along the coast and in the mountains. Free overnight parking is regulated by each municipality and is not allowed in many protected areas. Check the local rules wherever you plan to stop.
What driving licence do I need?
A category B licence is enough. Most companies ask for 2 years of driving experience and a minimum age between 21 and 25; check the exact requirement before booking.
Can I travel to Cantabria or Galicia?
Most companies allow travel in Spain without extra conditions, and some allow Portugal or France with prior notice or a supplement. Always ask before you go.
